Composers for vocal ensemble

Biennale College Musica 2021
Composers for vocal ensemble

The workshop is dedicated to young composers interested in writing for a cappella vocal ensemble (max. 5 voices). Proposals can include live electronics, amplification or tape production. Any special requirements must be discussed with the workshop tutors in advance.

The selected composers will have the opportunity to write a new vocal work (15 minutes maximum) under the supervision of the Artistic Director of the Biennale Musica, Lucia Ronchetti, supported by different tutors.

The vocal ensemble Neue Vocalsolisten will perform the new compositions within the Biennale Musica (17-26 September 2021) as world premieres.

The workshop will consist of three different stages.
The first stage will be dedicated to the conception of the work, the textual treatment and the experimentation of different vocal techniques under the supervision of the tutors. Classes will also focus on traditional and recent vocal techniques, their specific notation and the electronic treatment of the voice.

The subject, the text and the dramaturgy of the selected projects will be the object of an open discussion between the Artistic Director, composers, tutors and members of the vocal ensemble Neue Vocalsolisten.

The composition of the first version of the new pieces will be followed by the second stage of the workshop, which will be concerned on the evaluation of the compositional ideas and their performability. The third stage will be dedicated to the work on the CIMM Studios (La Biennale di Venezia Centre for Computer Music and Multimedia) for the compositions requiring electronics treatment.

The Biennale College Musica team, under the supervision of the Artistic Director, will be in communication with the selected composers throughout the whole process of composition, from April to September 2021 and will also be available for suggestions and revisions of the new scores.
