Dancers and choreographers may submit their applications until 16 and 23 January 2020, respectively.

Biennale College - Dance 2020

La Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, announces the new edition of the Biennale College – Dance with two international calls dedicated to young dancers and to new choreographers, as set forth in the project by Director Marie Chouinard.

Starting Wednesday December 4th 2019 the calls are on the website and will remain open as follows:
- the call for dancers through January 16th 2020
- the call for choreographers through January 23rd 2020

The Dancer project

A maximum of 15 young dancers from the ages of 18 to 25, with a solid training and a previous qualifying experience, will be selected. They will participate in a 13-week-intensive programme (May 4th > June 14th, 2020) with daily training sessions to develop awareness of the body (somatic approach) and to study the movement language and repertory of Ohad Naharin, focusing specifically on the piece titled Humus Plus with internationally renowned teachers.

In the final phase of the programme, the dancers will be involved in a new creation developed for them by choreographer Marco D’Agostin which, together with Humus Plus by Ohad Naharin, will be presented to the public in a single event of the 14th International Festival of Contemporary Dance of La Biennale di Venezia.

The Choreographer project

New choreographers, aged 32 and under, are offered the opportunity to create an original 20-minute work. The selection will designate up to 3 choreographers, who have presented at least one original creation in public and who have already undertaken a professional career.

The 3 selected choreographers will be involved from May 4th to June 14th 2020, and from May 4th to June 14th will work with 7 professional dancers for a period of 6 weeks, ending with a public performance of each of the 3 original creations during a single event as part of the 14th International Festival of Contemporary Dance of La Biennale di Venezia.

During the elaboration, development and production of their creations, the 3 selected choreographers will be supported by the following experts: an expert in Merce Cunningham’s composition method, a dramaturg, a coach in choreography, a light designer and a director specialized in set design.
