synopsis

Carlito, the shy dreamer, and Eduardinho, the fearless leader, both court Teresinha, the only girl in the group. To show his affection, Carlito steals a doll and one night runs over rooftops to deliver it. Tension builds between the boys, and the group begins to turn against Carlito.

director's statement

"Intentions in Aniki-Bóbó? Yes, certainly. And maybe even ambitious, in trying to tell a story as simple as this: it was intended to mirror man’s problems in children, problems still in an embryonic state; to put into perspective concepts of good and evil, hatred and love, friendship and ingratitude. It was intended to suggest the fear of the night and the unknown, the attraction of life that pulses in all around us, contrasting with the monotony of what is closed, limited by walls, by force or by conventions. If one sees or feels any aspect of a social or economic character during the film, the fact is that this was never a fundamental point of the structure or construction. Just as it wasn’t in Douro, Faina Fluvial. At most, in Aniki-Bóbó, intentionally, but very lightly, I intended to suggest a message of love and understanding to suchlike, as a warning to a society that struggles and despairs in injustice." (Manoel de Oliveira to Cine-Clube do Porto, for programme no. 183 of a session devoted to Portuguese cinema, December 1954)
