synopsis

Edward G. Robinson portrays an Italian- American banker who uses emotional cruelty to control his four adult sons. Robinson’s character, Gino Monetti, breaks the law repeatedly to build a business empire and is arrested as a result. His bitter sons decline to help him beat the charges. Three of the sons then assume control of the business and kick Gino out. Only one son, Max, stays loyal to his father, which angers the other three sons. The other three use devious means to have Max thrown into prison as well. Max promises his father on his deathbed that he’ll get revenge on his brothers.

critc's note

"Mankiewicz is a remarkable director of actors... It is not when left to his own devices that [Conte] seems an exceptional actor: sniffing a powderpuff, caressing a fur, the slightest gesture springs from a theatrical instinct for effect. Equally remarkable, too, are Edward G. Robinson’s bath, the meal in his dining-room, and one of the finest flashbacks in the history of the cinema, the whole length of a staircase, accompanied by a theme from Rossini." (Jean-Luc Godard, La Gazette du Cinéma, June 1950)
