synopsis

In the bustling urban jungle of Taipei, true human connections are scarce. A vacant luxury apartment becomes a space for casual encounters, where three individuals, each leading a solitary life, unknowingly share the same roof. Columbarium salesperson Kang takes a key off a keyhole right after he sees it being left there. After a long day running around for work, apartment sales representative May and street vendor owner Jung randomly meet and spark a flame at night. Little do they know, the apartment May and Jung have sex in is the very same one that Kang thinks he can have all to himself. They play the game of hide and seek that’s filled with lust and desire. But all this makes them thoroughly feel their inner solitude and emptiness even more.

critic's note

"From the very first sequences, Aiqing wansui presents itself as a film of voids, a formal prison: the shots, in their surgical precision, leave no escape, and lay bare the individual protagonists. Yet, we shouldn’t mistake the rigour of Tsai’s staging for coldness. Behind every image, writes Jean-Michel Frodon in Le Monde, 'one senses omnipresent, torrid desire arising in flashes so brief they hardly seem to last at all — with no chance of inscribing themselves in time. But these flashes are there'. Aiqing wansui is, in fact, above all, a film of feelings." (Lorenzo Baldassarri, Lo Specchio Scuro)
