Synopsis

La Biennale di Venezia: il cinema al tempo del Covid is a video diary, produced by the Venice Biennale in collaboration with Rai Cinema and the Istituto Luce Cinecittà, of what went on “backstage” at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, held under the restrictions imposed by the safety protocols required by the covid-19 pandemic.

Director’s Statement

Last year the Biennale asked me to document what was perhaps going to be a unique, even historic (the question is still open) staging of the Film Festival, right in the middle of a global pandemic. I was busy on another project and only had a few days at my disposal, but it was quite a challenge and I agreed. Out of this came a small video diary, I can’t call it a film. Notes recorded live on an unexpected piece of the history of the festival and the cinema, they consist simply of men and women encountered at the heart of the event, reflecting on what they and we were living through.
