Synopsis
Pietro Coccia (1962-2018) was one of the most talented photojournalists of Italian cinema, with a career that lasted over thirty years. Pietro il Grande is a tribute to the professional photographer and friend of all the leading figures in our cinema over the course of more than three decades: a career reconstructed in about four hundred images accompanied by eight great scores to re-create the special magic of photos of the world of cinema.
Director’s Statement
When Pietro died at his home, suddenly and alone, just after returning from Cannes 2018, I immediately thought of using my experience as a documentarist of the movies to pay him homage. Dying so unexpectedly, as if at the beginning of a mystery that was unfortunately all too real, Pietro left behind a vast amount of photographs, prints, slides and digital images, computers filled with pictures but no password. My friendship with Pietro, which dates back to our schooldays at the Liceo Giulio Cesare in Rome, obliged me to take up the challenge: that of looking at tens of thousands of photos to choose the few hundred that would be included in the documentary. For this I must thank his brother Benedetto and Tiziana Rocca, who showed great patience in helping me with this work.
