Synopsis

Between 1906 and 1954, Henri Matisse created over twenty paintings exploring the theme of dance. This subject shaped many of his artistic choices, influencing his style and technique. Movement and dance were constant sources of inspiration for the master of colour throughout his life’s work.
An immersive, dance-led journey through Matisse’s most iconic works, Danse Danse Danse – Matisse invites viewers to step inside his world. Featuring original choreography by Sarah Silverblatt-Buser, in which the user takes part, it pays tribute to the vibrant movements and colours that define his art. This journey into dance and painting grants an intimate view of the creation of some of his greatest masterpieces, including La Danse (1909, The Museum of Modern Art, New York), La Danse de Merion (Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia), La Danse inachevée and La Danse de Paris (Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris).

Main Creators’ Statement

“I live more in dance.” To “live more” with Matisse, you must feel the farandole of the Moulin de la Galette, the Catalan sardana, Diaghilev’s ballets — feel their tempo, their notes and grasp the path that, from La Joie de vivre and Shukshin’s Danse (II), led Matisse to Merion’s La Danse.
Dancing bodies were at the heart of our creation: choreographing sketches frozen in the rapidity of gesture, the conflict between drawing and colour, the form that takes precedence over the line — adjusting, moving, blending with the next, and leading to balance, the perfect arabesque of the Whole. Bodies that address our creation to perception rather than analysis, bringing us closer to the words of Matisse.
