Synopsis
After surviving a suicide bomb attack, 12-year-old Roqaia finds herself in the middle of a media frenzy, as she deals with her trauma all by herself.
Director’s Statement
I find the innocent smile of a child to be the most beautiful sight in the world. But the moment children in Afghanistan open their eyes, the sound of death replace their mother’s lullaby. I feel helpless with my inability to change their surroundings. When we started shooting Roqaia, violence broke on the streets of Kabul and all the roads were closed. So, we had to change the script, location, and even our characters in the middle of the shooting. For me, as an Afghan filmmaker, any moment that I am alive and able to tell the stories of my country and my people is the most significant moment. I realised how fortunate I am to be just alive: that’s why I want to do my best with every moment of my life.
