Synopsis

The film was inspired by the lives of coal miners who, due to their efforts in the first post-war years of socialist Yugoslavia, were glorified as shock workers and considered national heroes. The main character is a coal miner who, despite being glorified for his hardworking achievements and considered an exemplary socialist worker, lives a life that is anything but glitz and glamour.

Director’s Statement

Slike iz života udarnika was made based on a feeling, my feeling, the feeling of a man from Bosnia who saw the Stakhanovite tribe as the most moral form of acknowledging the working class, all that communism and a socialist society meant at the time. The workers withdrew into anonymity and so, while working on the documentary, I realized and discovered that the famous Stakhanovites, who had represented the flower of the labour movement across Yugoslavia, such as Sirotanović, Babajić, Kojić, Timotijević and Petek from Slovenia, were quite anonymous and had disappeared. I went in search of them. Where had they disappeared to? I found them. Alija Sirotanović was in his village, far from Breza, entirely forgotten and I must say unhappy.
