Perennials

After the death of his estranged father, Elias returns to his family’s abandoned vacation home to take stock of what’s left behind. Torn between grief, resentment, and nostalgia, and wholly unwilling to confront any of those emotions, Elias wants nothing more than to be done with the place. His little niece, Emi, who’s accompanying him, has designs of her own, a hunger for adventure, and a task she’s determined to carry out.

About 25 years ago, my grandfather bought a little hut in Northern Italy and expanded it into a house. He’s not a man of many words, but he’ll recount, quite precisely, how he laid the tiles in the garden, the big bags of cement he used to carry effortlessly down the stairs, and how my grandmother would put on some of his work clothes and help him mix it. I returned to the house alongside my grandfather in 2018, hoping to help him take care of the upkeep. Seeing the place again, still beautiful but mostly abandoned and declining alongside my grandfather’s health, sparked a series of difficult emotions. Perennials, though sporting a cast of fictional characters, is very much inspired by that little house and all the history tied to it.
