Synopsis
The chronicle of a Portuguese family that owns one of the largest estates in Europe, on the south bank of the River Tagus. A herdade delves deeply into the secrets of their homestead, portraying the historical, political, economic and social life of Portugal, since the 1940s, through the Carnation revolution to these days.
Director’s Statement
The ‘herdade’, which has its origin in the Latin ‘hereditas’, is a kingdom dominated by a charismatic and progressive man, inside a country dominated by a fascist dictatorship. The place works as a metaphor for everything that goes on with our, bigger than life main character. Both begin grandiose but with the passing of time they will inevitably clash head-on with the winds of change and will reveal the imperfections, the gray zones, and fall apart. Throughout life, choices define us, but we carry with us substance that we do not perceive or control. Something that was born with us, something we inherited. This film tells us about those invisible connections that define and condition us.
