Directors’ Statement
In the last two years more than one person has asked for a film about Claudio Caligari. We preferred to let some time go by to reflect and stifle a bit of the discomfort that arises when talking about him. Maybe because we detest rhetoric, but also rhetoric about rhetoric, cynicism and the desire to draw conclusions from behind a computer keyboard. Now that several years have gone by since Non essere cattivo (Don’t Be Bad) came out, it is possible to approach such a complex but fascinating person with the just distance and necessary lucidity.
A few meetings do not suffice to wheedle out the essence of the seventy-year old with such intense experience behind him. Such impressions will only be partial, and might even be far-removed from the truth.
We therefore have no intention of answering the usual questions: why Claudio Caligari found himself on the sidelines of the cinema world, deliberately or not, the wrongs he suffered and the prizes he was not awarded. Now more than ever it is the films that talk about him and make him known. All we want to do is reflect on the path of an author who had coherent ideas about life and cinema, stood firm in his beliefs, was equally intransigent with himself and expressed his character in the few works he was able to make with the expressive freedom that he believed obligatory.
