Tourmaline è un’attivista, scrittrice e regista la cui pratica artistica esamina la rimozione delle comunità nere, queer e trans dalla storia. I suoi film combinano le storie di icone queer, drag queen e attiviste e attivisti per i diritti civili di gay e trans, i cui contributi culturali sono troppo spesso appiattiti, patologizzati o del tutto trascurati. Nei suoi ritratti cinematografici sperimentali, le attiviste Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (The Personal Things, 2016), Marsha P. Johnson e Sylvia Rivera (Happy Birthday, Marsha!, 2018), nonché la leggendaria drag queen Egyptt LaBeija (Atlantic Is a Sea of Bones, 2017), prendono vita in narrazioni che giocano con le informazioni comunemente offerte dalla storia ufficiale o rinvenibili negli archivi. Mary of Ill Fame (2020–2021) dà forma a una storia di fantasia incentrata sulla lavoratrice del sesso trans nera Mary Jones (interpretata da Rowin Amone). La donna, realmente esistita, era parte di una comunità di girls of ill fame (“ragazze di malaffare”) e, negli anni Trenta dell’Ottocento, fu incarcerata per aver rubato il portafoglio a un uomo. Mary of Ill Fame immagina Jones nel Seneca Village, una comunità newyorkese indipendente, formata da piccoli proprietari per lo più afroamericani liberi e immigrati irlandesi, che si trovava sul terreno oggi occupato da Central Park. Combinando immagini di Jones in brutale reclusione e nella sua graziosa casa nel Seneca Village, Tourmaline immagina lo spazio di potere, libertà e piacere che la vera Jones avrebbe meritato.
